Microsoft CryptoAPI Spoofing Vulnerability Security Announcement (CVE-2020-0601)

Microsoft CryptoAPI Spoofing Vulnerability Security Announcement (CVE-2020-0601)

On January 14th, 2020 Microsoft released patches for a vulnerability that if exploited would allow malicious software to appear as though it was from a trusted, legitimate source. This vulnerability bypasses Windows’ ability to verify cryptographic trust, permitting an attacker to create a false certificate to sign malicious code. The NSA, in their cybersecurity advisory, “assesses the vulnerability to be severe” and the “consequences of not patching the vulnerability are severe and widespread”. This vulnerability could facilitate an easier spread of vulnerabilities like ransomware undetected. Microsoft patches ensure the cryptographic certificate is completely validated and currently are the only mitigation.
